The castle town of Hagi Castle was planned with a layout like the grid of a Go board. The layout of the city remains unchanged to this day. The castle town was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015. The castle town contains samurai residences, the homes of wealthy merchants, and machiya townhouses.
